GGI is the only active non-profit body (Charitable Trust) in Fiji devoted to the study and advancement of Girmit Diaspora. It has a number of projects, for example, Immigration Pass online database (www.girmitdata.org), publication of journals Indenture Papers: Studies on Girmitiyas (refereed publication), and Indenture Dialogue (see www.girmit.ac.fj), operating the Brij Lal Library (the only public library in Fiji not funded by the Government or municipal councils), working towards creation of a Girmit Museum (http://globalgirmitinstitute.org/girmit-museum-announcement/), working on creation of a Writing Centre and Museum in Northern Division in Fiji, Annual Girmit Open Golf Tournaments, annual Caddies Golf Tournaments, amongst others.
